The short answer: one program is still real

Southern California Edison's Charge Ready Home rebate is the program people mean when they ask about panel-upgrade subsidies. It is real, it is still referenced for 2026 projects — and the headline number you see online needs its fine print read carefully.

What it actually covers

The rebate offsets the cost of upgrading your panel to 200A and installing the 240V dedicated circuit for a Level 2 EV charger. Note what it does not cover: the charger unit itself. The program pays toward the electrical infrastructure — the panel work and the circuit — not the hardware you hang on the wall.

Who qualifies — and who does not

The frequently quoted $4,200 is the maximum for income-qualified households only — it is not available to everyone. Residents in disadvantaged communities may qualify for up to $2,100. Your eligibility, and your amount, depend on program rules that change over time. Anyone promising you the full amount before checking your qualification is selling, not advising.

The fine print that decides everything

  1. Your existing panel must be below 200A — the program is for upgrades, not for homes already at 200A.
  2. The Level 2 charger must be installed within 120 days of the EV purchase or lease.
  3. Again: the rebate covers panel-to-200A work and the 240V circuit, not the charger itself.
  4. Program terms, funding, and amounts change. Check SCE's official website for the latest terms before making any plans — this article is guidance, not a program guarantee.

Our honest take

Do not buy an EV or schedule a panel upgrade counting on rebate money. Treat any rebate as a bonus that lowers the final bill, and size the project on its own merits: the panel either needs the upgrade for your loads, or it does not. If your panel is already at 200A, the program simply does not apply to you — but the charger circuit itself still needs a proper permit and a clean installation. If it does need the upgrade, we will help you document the work so you can claim whatever you qualify for.
